It's a Gas!

By Dennis E. Powell | Oct 07, 2026 at 3:31 AM

If everything worked as well as the product called Evapo-Rust, the world would be a much better place.

That’s just one of the many lessons learned during my recent — successful! — project to transform my old, nonfunctioning gasoline-powered generator into something much better.

Of Visions, Dents and A Score and Five Years

By Timothy R. Butler | Oct 05, 2026 at 8:53 PM

Twenty-five years ago today, the lights turned on here at OFB. We were going to help the Linux Desktop revolution happen. We’re not there yet, but it has been an interesting ride.

Too Late Smart

By Dennis E. Powell | Sep 30, 2026 at 11:28 PM

My grandparents, whose little farm was next door to ours so my sisters and I grew up effectively with two houses and two very different sets of parents, were lovely people.

The Promise of Self-Driving Translation

By Timothy R. Butler | Sep 30, 2026 at 5:33 PM

After the Summer

By Dennis E. Powell | Sep 23, 2026 at 5:14 PM

My friends Pat and Bobby visited briefly over the weekend.

By Timothy R. Butler | Sep 16, 2026 at 8:53 PM

The twenty-fifth anniversary weekend of 9/11 was an ironic time for the Democratic Socialists and the Alt-Right to amplify their common war on AI. We may be on the cusp of a new PATRIOT Act. If we are, it’ll be as bad an idea as it was the first time.

AImazon Hell

By Dennis E. Powell | Sep 09, 2026 at 11:16 PM

People I know who have Wen-brand home generators seem to like them, which is part of the reason I decided to purchase one. The rest of the reason is that it had the features I sought at a price I was willing to pay.

Siri AI Once Previewed the Future, Now It Leaves It to Others

By Timothy R. Butler | Sep 09, 2026 at 11:05 PM

I’m closer to “Inbox Zero” than I’ve been in years today. I’d like to say that’s because of Apple’s spiffy new Siri AI. It isn’t. It doesn’t do that. But Siri AI teases a future and those already accomplishing that future show what Apple needs to do next.
